Guwahati: At least 61 people have died after days of heavy monsoon rainfall triggered widespread flooding in India’s northeastern state of Assam, with more than 700,000 residents affected across nine districts.
Officials said on Saturday that although water levels have started to recede in some areas, the flood situation remains critical.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 14 additional deaths were reported over the past 24 hours, bringing this year’s flood-related death toll in the state to 61.
The authority said more than 705,100 people have been impacted by the flooding in the districts of Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as relief and rescue operations remain underway in the affected areas. Officials are assessing damage and providing assistance to displaced families as communities recover from one of the state’s most severe monsoon flood events this season.
