Spain Clinch Second World Cup With Dramatic Win Over Argentina

New Jersey: Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time to lift the men’s World Cup trophy for the second time in the nation’s history.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres scored Spain’s only goal of the match after the European champions dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the final.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s patience and resilience, saying the match could have been decided much earlier but acknowledged the challenge of breaking down a determined Argentine side. He described the triumph as a reward for a generation of players who have achieved success at every level.

Captain Rodri, who was named the tournament’s Best Player, lifted the World Cup trophy after leading Spain through an impressive campaign. Spain controlled much of the final, while Argentina relied heavily on goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.

Veteran captain Lionel Messi, playing what could be his final World Cup, admitted Spain were the better team and congratulated the champions after the match. Argentina’s task became even more difficult after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time, forcing the South Americans to play extra time with ten men.

The final also attracted attention off the pitch, with a Super Bowl-style halftime show extending the interval beyond the traditional break. Political moments surrounding the tournament also drew headlines, but Spain’s commanding performances ultimately defined the competition.

The victory gives Spain their first men’s World Cup title since 2010 and adds to the country’s recent international success, with Spain’s women’s team also holding the world title.
