In a move to enhance public transport efficiency, Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has introduced 726 new bus shelters across the emirate. The shelters are strategically located in high-density areas and near metro stations to improve passenger convenience and connectivity between buses, metro, and taxis.
Designed in seven different models based on passenger volume, the shelters cater to both busy stations with over 750 daily users and smaller stops with fewer than 100 commuters. Key facilities include air-conditioned waiting areas, seating, and digital displays showing real-time bus routes and schedules.
These upgrades are expected to serve more than 192 million passengers annually, making public transport more appealing, especially during Dubai’s intense summer heat. Several major stops are connected to multiple bus routes, helping reduce travel time significantly.
The shelters are also designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring dedicated spaces for wheelchair users. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision of creating an inclusive urban environment under the “My Community… A City for Everyone” program.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, improving public transport infrastructure will support sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions and strengthening Dubai’s integrated mobility network.
