EU Indefinitely Delays ETIAS Launch; Visa-Free Travellers Can Continue Travelling Without Authorisation

The European Union has indefinitely postponed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), meaning travellers from visa-exempt countries will not currently need to obtain ETIAS approval before visiting participating European countries. The system, originally scheduled to launch in 2021, has faced multiple delays.

The official ETIAS website currently states that the system is not in operation and that applications are not being accepted. The EU has said it will announce a specific launch date several months before the system becomes operational. The latest decision comes shortly after reports suggested that ETIAS could be delayed until 2027.

ETIAS is designed as an electronic travel authorisation system for nationals of visa-exempt countries travelling to participating European destinations. It is broadly comparable to the US ESTA and Canada’s eTA. Until the system becomes operational, eligible visa-free travellers can continue to travel without obtaining an ETIAS authorisation.
