Vijay likely to form government in Tamil Nadu as Left parties, VCK back TVK

Political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu appears to be nearing an end, with reports suggesting that Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi are likely to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in forming the next government.

According to reports, the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India Marxist and VCK are expected to formally announce their support for TVK during a press conference later in the day.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly election results had triggered intense political uncertainty after TVK emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the absolute majority required to form the government.

Reports said Governor R N Ravi had earlier declined Vijay’s request to form the government, citing the lack of majority support. During a second meeting held within two days, the governor reportedly insisted that TVK present letters of support from at least 118 MLAs before proceeding with government formation.

TVK currently has the support of the Indian National Congress, which holds five seats in the Assembly. The party still required additional support to cross the majority mark.

Meanwhile, speculation had also emerged regarding the possibility of a coalition arrangement between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to form the government.

Reacting strongly to such reports, TVK warned that all 107 of its MLAs would resign collectively if the DMK and AIADMK attempted to establish a coalition government.

If support from the Left parties and VCK is officially confirmed, Vijay’s TVK would move significantly closer to securing the numbers required to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
