One hundred days after the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, the Middle East remains caught in a fragile and uncertain period marked by ongoing tensions, unresolved disputes and an incomplete ceasefire.
The conflict, which began on February 28, inflicted significant damage on Iranian military infrastructure and eliminated several senior Iranian leaders. US President Donald Trump had stated that the campaign aimed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, weaken its military capabilities and push Tehran towards a broader security agreement with Washington.
While military objectives were partially achieved, many of the broader political goals remain unmet. Iran has not accepted all US demands, negotiations have yet to produce a comprehensive agreement and regional instability continues to affect multiple fronts.
One of the conflict’s most significant consequences has been the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of global oil exports passes. Despite international efforts, shipping through the waterway remains heavily restricted, contributing to elevated energy and insurance costs worldwide.
Analysts say the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as Iran’s most effective source of leverage. Rather than relying solely on military actions, Tehran has demonstrated its ability to influence global markets and international trade by affecting one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
Although a ceasefire announced in April reduced large-scale fighting, the agreement has not fully ended hostilities. Both sides continue to accuse each other of violations, while sporadic missile and drone incidents have kept tensions high across the Gulf region.
As the conflict enters its 100th day, uncertainty remains over whether diplomatic efforts can deliver a lasting settlement. Key issues involving Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security arrangements, Lebanon and maritime navigation remain unresolved, leaving the region in a prolonged state of limbo.
