Rome: Italy’s Ministry of Health has maintained red heat alerts for 14 cities on Sunday as extreme temperatures continue to pose serious health risks across large parts of the country.
According to the ministry, the number of cities under the highest-level heat warning has gradually declined from 16 on Saturday, after an earlier forecast had projected 19 cities under red alert. Despite the reduction, authorities said dangerous heat conditions continue to affect many regions.
Meteorologists warned that southern Italy remains the worst-affected area, with temperatures in some locations expected to approach 50°C. The intense heat has prompted officials to advise residents, particularly older adults, children and people with chronic illnesses, to take precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Weather forecasters expect the current heatwave to begin easing from Monday as the African anticyclone responsible for the extreme temperatures shifts westward. However, southern Italy and the country’s islands are expected to remain exceptionally hot, although temperatures are likely to decline slightly.
Health authorities continue to urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and follow official weather advisories until conditions improve.
