Kuwait City: Kuwait is preparing to introduce new regulations to strengthen children’s digital safety, with fresh guidelines and legislation aimed at regulating minors’ use of electronic platforms expected to be announced soon.
Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology and Acting Minister of Information and Culture Omar Al-Omar said protecting families and children requires a coordinated effort involving multiple government agencies rather than a single authority.
He also said the government has adopted a policy of using the Sahel app as the unified platform for all government services instead of developing separate mobile applications for individual departments.
As part of efforts to enhance online child protection, Kuwait will work with leading global technology companies, including Microsoft and Google, to support digital safety initiatives.
Al-Omar noted that while introducing legislation to regulate children’s online activities is relatively straightforward, enforcing the rules and taking action against foreign companies that violate them will be the biggest challenge.
He added that Kuwait is studying successful child online protection frameworks adopted by the UAE and several European countries as it develops its own legal framework.
The proposed legislation is being prepared in coordination with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) and the Ministry of Justice.
