Hurricane Lowell brought strong winds and heavy rain to western Hawaii on Tuesday, causing widespread power outages and damaging sections of coastal roads.
On Kauai, powerful winds uprooted trees and disrupted electricity supplies across the island. Nearly 35,000 customers were without power early Tuesday, according to the island’s utility cooperative, as crews worked to assess and respond to the outages.
The storm also damaged parts of coastal roads, while emergency authorities continued evaluating the extent of the impact across affected areas.
Officials urged residents to conserve water and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly while road conditions remained hazardous and damage assessments were underway.
Authorities and utility crews are continuing response efforts as the western Hawaiian islands deal with the effects of the storm.
