Over 40? Don’t Ignore These Warning Signs That Could Indicate Heart Problems

As people grow older, changes in energy levels, sleep patterns and physical stamina are often considered a normal part of ageing. However, some symptoms that appear after the age of 40 should not be dismissed as age-related changes, as they may sometimes indicate underlying heart and blood vessel problems.

According to a health report published by The Indian Express, erectile dysfunction in men and persistent fatigue in women are among the symptoms that deserve attention. Although these symptoms do not necessarily indicate heart disease, identifying their underlying causes is important, particularly when they persist or occur alongside other warning signs.

Erectile Dysfunction in Men

Erectile dysfunction refers to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Although the condition becomes more common with age, it should not automatically be considered a natural part of ageing.

Several factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction, including stress, diabetes, hormonal changes, certain medications and problems affecting blood circulation.

In some men, erectile dysfunction may be an early indicator of cardiovascular disease. This is because blood vessel problems that restrict circulation to the penis can also affect other parts of the cardiovascular system.

However, not everyone experiencing erectile dysfunction has heart disease. Men with recurring or persistent symptoms should consult a healthcare professional to identify the underlying cause and assess potential cardiovascular risks.

Persistent Fatigue in Women

Women may experience fatigue due to several factors, including demanding work schedules, inadequate sleep, family responsibilities and emotional stress.

However, persistent exhaustion that does not improve despite adequate rest should not be ignored. Conditions such as anaemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes and sleep problems can contribute to ongoing fatigue. In some cases, cardiovascular conditions may also be responsible.

Women should pay particular attention when unusual tiredness occurs alongside shortness of breath, chest discomfort, dizziness or cold sweats.

Heart attack symptoms in women can sometimes differ from the commonly recognised presentation of severe chest pain. Other symptoms may occur alongside chest discomfort or, in some cases, without prominent chest pain.

What Are the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack?

A heart attack does not always begin with sudden, severe chest pain. Symptoms can develop gradually, appear intermittently or present differently from one person to another.

Important warning signs include:

  • Chest discomfort: Pain, pressure, tightness or heaviness in the centre of the chest.
  • Pain spreading to other areas: Discomfort extending to one or both arms, shoulders, back, neck or jaw.
  • Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing or a choking sensation.
  • Cold sweats: Sudden sweating without an obvious reason.
  • Nausea: Feeling sick or experiencing stomach discomfort.
  • Dizziness: Light-headedness or a sensation of fainting.
  • Unusual fatigue: Sudden or unexplained exhaustion, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms.

Take Care of Your Heart Health

Recognising unusual physical changes and seeking medical advice can help identify potential cardiovascular problems early. People over 40 should pay attention to persistent or unexplained symptoms rather than automatically attributing them to ageing.

Managing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying physically active and attending recommended health check-ups can support cardiovascular health.

If symptoms suggestive of a heart attack appear suddenly, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Do not wait for the symptoms to disappear or attempt to diagnose the condition yourself.
