Abu Dhabi: The 2G mobile network will be discontinued in the UAE by December next year. The country's Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority said on Sunday. Ahead of this, the authority has announced that sales of mobile devices operating only on the second generation mobile network will end by June next year.

The 2G mobile network has been in operation in the country since 1994. Although the telecom sector has shifted to modern technologies including 5G, the 2G mobile network is still operational. With the new decision, the country's telecom companies Etisalat and Duo will end their 2G services by December 2022.
