BRITAIN APOLOGIZES 30 YEARS AFTER SADDAM'S MANNED SHIELD IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The British government has expressed regret over the capture of Saddam Hussein 30 years later and the use of British Airways passengers as human shields. It is regrettable that the airline was not warned that Iraq had invaded Kuwait when the plane landed. Flight BA149 from London to Kuala Lumpur landed in Kuwait on August 2, 1990, hours after the invasion of Iraq by Kuwait, which led to the Second Gulf War.

The passengers were initially accommodated for days in a nearby hotel under the control of the Iraqi Chief of Staff. It was then flown to Baghdad and used as human shield in strategic locations. The 367 passengers and crew of the plane suffered four months of such brutality. Foreign Secretary Listrus told the British Parliament that the British Airways plane could have landed elsewhere if it had been notified of the invasion of Iraq on time.
