US STATE DEPARTMENT REITERATED ITS DEMAND TO STOP THE SPONSORSHIP SYSTEM IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The US State Department reiterated its demand to stop the sponsorship system in Kuwait. It has been pointed out that there was a long delay in this action. Now is the time to take steps to improve the conditions of migrant workers, says the US State Department's 2022 annual report on human trafficking. The report highlights the need to bring about positive change and encourage governments to improve working conditions.

Kuwait is making great efforts to eradicate human trafficking. However, Kuwait is included with the countries in the second category of the list as it does not meet the minimum standards in this regard. The report states that Kuwait should take more effective measures against human trafficking.

The government continues to implement the 'Tamkeen' program to tighten supervision of recruitment of foreign workers and provide greater protection to migrants from vulnerable sections through the labor recruitment process. But the report also shows that the government has not made more efforts compared to the period when the previous report came out.
