GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY ON FUEL, ALEGATION THAT GIVING EXPATRIATES IS A LOSS FOR KUWAIT

Kuwait City: Controversy over government subsidies for fuel continues in Kuwait. Controversy stems from both studies calling for the removal of subsidies to boost the country's budget and calls for continued international price differentials to support citizens. Kuwait is one of the cheapest countries in the world in terms of fuel prices. Average price is 95 fils per litre.

This is very low compared to Saudi Arabia 185 fils, Qatar 175 fils, UAE 335 fils etc. As the government provides support to all consumers, citizens and non-residents, the rise in prices in the global market is not affected. Citizens make up about 30 percent and residents 70 percent of the country's population structure. This is also reflected in fuel consumption, as the percentage of non-residents with driving licenses accounts for 55 percent of the total number of licenses issued. Therefore, those raising controversy are raising that half of the financial subsidy value provided by the government for fuel is to help the expatriates and that Kuwait has a huge loss.
