3,000 FOREIGN DRIVER'S LICENSES SUSPENDED

Kuwait City: About 3,000 driving permits issued to expatriates have been blocked by the General Traffic Department (GTD) in the Interior Ministry because they were found to have been in violation of the rules. In order to get these licences ready for their eventual withdrawal, the department took this action during the first week of its assessment of driving licences issued to expatriates.

This is in accordance with Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who directed that the driving licence file be reopened. The Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic and Operations, Major General Jamal Al-Sayegh, and the Director General of GTD, Major General Yousef Al-Khadda, were given the responsibility for following up on the matter. To ascertain whether the conditions of the licences issued to expatriates were met, an archive of those licences was examined. According to sources, the blocked licences were legitimately issued and were not forgeries; however, the holders of these licences either had their work permits changed or switched to a different line of work, making them ineligible for benefits based on their salary or profession.

The assessment will take at least two months to complete, according to sources. If licences are discovered to be in violation of the terms, they will be blocked and the holders will be contacted. The concerned person will be blocked through the "My ID" and "Sahel" applications if they do not hand over the licence, making it impossible for them to conduct any business with the Ministry of Interior. He will be dealt with legally and deported if he is discovered operating a vehicle with a suspended licence, sources warned.
