Kuwait City: The Kuwaiti Cabinet has decided to launch a national anti-drug campaign at the request of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The decision was made during the Cabinet's customary weekly meeting on Monday at Seif Palace, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Barak Ali Al-Shetan in a statement issued after the meeting.

The minister stated that the anti-drug campaign will be based on raising public awareness, combating drugs, and establishing drug rehabilitation centres with the assistance of national and international experts. The anti-drug effort would involve the ministries of interior, health, education, social affairs and community development, Awqaf and Islamic affairs, information, and several other state bodies. In this regard, the health minister was asked to lay out congenial visions for establishing drug rehabilitation centres that would use the best and most sophisticated treatment methods, according to the Cabinet minister. Speaking to the ministers about the country's latest health situation, the health minister reassured them that the Covid-19 variant of XBB does not cause any serious symptoms.

He did emphasise, however, that people should continue to avoid crowds, wear facemasks if they have respiratory symptoms, and get vaccinated against flu and Covid-19. First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Talal Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, for his part, provided a briefing on all aspects of this serious social scourge, citing official statistics and data on the number of drug victims and quantities of drugs seized in the country. The minister also elaborated on the interior ministry's plan to expand efforts to eradicate the drug phenomenon and rehabilitate addicts.
