Microsoft Makes TPM 2.0 Requirement for Windows 11 ‘Non-Negotiable’ for Security

Microsoft has firmly stated that the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 is an essential and non-negotiable requirement for Windows 11, underlining the significant role it plays in ensuring the operating system’s future security. As the support for Windows 10 is set to end by October 2025, the company is pushing for a transition to Windows 11, highlighting the crucial security enhancements provided by TPM 2.0. This hardware-level technology, whether implemented via a dedicated chip or motherboard firmware, significantly improves encryption, authentication, and overall system integrity protection.

Steven Hosking, a senior product manager at Microsoft, emphasized TPM 2.0’s role in safeguarding sensitive information, particularly as artificial intelligence capabilities continue to evolve and influence both physical and cloud-based systems. As a result of these security measures, Windows 11 is only compatible with PCs featuring CPUs from 2018 or later, leaving older devices unable to upgrade. Microsoft is maintaining its stance on these security standards, even though this decision limits the number of eligible devices for Windows 11.

With the end-of-support deadline for Windows 10 fast approaching, Microsoft is actively encouraging users to upgrade to new hardware by displaying full-screen prompts. However, businesses or users seeking flexibility can opt for Windows 11 LTSC 2024, where TPM 2.0 is not mandatory, but CPU compatibility restrictions still apply.
