Brussels: Belgium has recorded 1,747 excess deaths during the late June heatwave, marking the highest heat-related death toll in the country since official records began in 2000, according to the national public health institute Sciensano.
The institute said the excess deaths were recorded between June 18 and July 1, representing a 47.8% increase in mortality compared with the expected number of deaths during the same period.
Preliminary data released earlier had estimated 1,222 excess deaths, but updated figures confirmed the final toll was significantly higher.
According to Sciensano, the unusually high mortality was caused by a combination of prolonged extreme heat, exceptionally high temperatures and elevated ozone concentrations, all of which placed severe pressure on public health.
Authorities also warned that Belgium is likely to face another heatwave in the coming days, with maximum temperatures expected to exceed 30°C for at least five consecutive days starting Saturday.
Health officials have urged vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses, to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and follow official heat safety advice.
