Kuwait City: Kuwait is moving ahead with plans to strengthen its electricity and water infrastructure by replacing the ageing Doha East Power Plant with a new, state-of-the-art facility capable of generating twice the current electricity output.
The government has also decided to gradually decommission the Doha East and Shuaiba power plants, both of which have been operating since 1977, and replace them with modern, higher-capacity facilities at the same locations.
The move is aimed at meeting Kuwait’s growing demand for electricity while improving the efficiency and reliability of the national power network.
The existing Doha East plant currently produces around 1,050 megawatts of electricity. Once the new station becomes operational, its generation capacity is expected to double, significantly increasing the country’s power supply.
Authorities said the existing generating units will continue operating until the new facility is completed. Upgrade and maintenance work is already underway to ensure uninterrupted electricity production during the transition, with around half of the planned rehabilitation work already completed.
The new power station will also feature advanced cybersecurity systems alongside modern power-generation technologies to enhance operational security.
Officials have urged the public to continue using electricity and water responsibly, stressing that conservation remains essential even as Kuwait expands its production capacity.
