Manama: Bahrain has reported improved workplace safety following the strict enforcement of its summer midday work ban, with authorities confirming a decline in heat-related workplace accidents and no fatalities on projects managed by the Ministry of Public Works during the restricted period.
Officials said private sector companies have shown strong compliance with the seasonal regulation, which prohibits outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers from extreme summer temperatures.
The improvement has been attributed to awareness campaigns, field inspections, and joint initiatives carried out by the Bahrain Free Trade Union Federation in cooperation with government authorities. As part of the “Free Trade Union for Safety in Summer” campaign, more than 150 workers involved in the Ministry of Public Works’ Waterfront Development Project received practical training on recognising heat-related illnesses, preventing heatstroke, and responding to emergency situations.
Jamal Al-Haiki, Head of the International Relations Department at the Ministry of Public Works, said the number of field inspection visits has doubled from five last year to ten this year. He added that 20 additional visits are planned before the summer midday work ban concludes on August 31.
Authorities said the continued inspections and worker education programmes are aimed at strengthening occupational safety and ensuring full compliance with labour protection regulations throughout the summer.
