Kuwait City: Kuwait is moving forward with two major infrastructure projects aimed at expanding the use of treated wastewater for agriculture, as the country seeks to strengthen food security and ensure more sustainable management of its limited water resources.
A total of 13 companies have submitted financial bids for the projects, which will develop treated water distribution networks serving Kuwait’s northern and southern regions.
The Central Agency for Public Tenders (CAPT) has opened the financial bids, according to information published in the official gazette, Kuwait Al Youm.
Six companies submitted bids for the southern region project, while seven companies are competing for the northern region project.
Treated Water to Support Agriculture
The projects are being implemented by Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works as part of government efforts to expand the use of quaternary-treated wastewater for irrigation and agricultural activities.
The projects cover the construction, development, operation and maintenance of infrastructure required to distribute treated water across the targeted agricultural areas.
By increasing the availability of treated water for irrigation, Kuwait aims to reduce dependence on freshwater resources, improve water sustainability and support greater domestic agricultural production.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to the country’s broader efforts to strengthen national food security.
Focus on Sustainable Water Management
Kuwait faces significant challenges in managing freshwater resources because of its arid climate and limited natural water supplies.
Expanding the reuse of highly treated wastewater provides an alternative source for agricultural irrigation while allowing valuable freshwater supplies to be directed towards other essential uses.
The Ministry of Public Works considers the projects among the country’s important infrastructure investments supporting long-term water sustainability and agricultural resilience.
Technical Evaluation Under Way
Following the opening of the financial bids, CAPT has forwarded the relevant documents to the Ministry of Public Works for technical evaluation.
The ministry has been instructed to complete its assessment and submit recommendations within 30 days from the publication of the notice in the official gazette.
The next stage will involve completing the procedures required to award the contracts to the successful bidders.
The projects form part of Kuwait’s long-term development strategy focused on sustainable infrastructure, efficient water management and greater utilisation of treated water to support agriculture and national food security.
