Chinese automaker Changan is preparing to expand its presence in Australia beyond its existing Deepal operations, with plans to introduce Changan-branded vehicles and its premium Avatr marque. The company is recruiting staff ahead of the local expansion, while Deepal will continue to operate under its existing distribution arrangement with Inchcape.
Avatr, which began production in 2022, focuses exclusively on electric and extended-range electric vehicles and has added a new model to its lineup each year. Changan’s wider portfolio includes electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and petrol-powered sedans and SUVs. However, the company has yet to confirm which Changan-branded models will be introduced in Australia. The E07, currently sold in China under the Changan Nevo name, is among the potential candidates.
Changan’s expansion comes as more Chinese premium brands strengthen their presence in Australia, following the arrival of Geely’s Zeekr and BYD’s Denza. Another possible model for the Australian market is the Hunter K50, an extended-range electric pickup featuring a 2.0-litre petrol engine, 31.18kWh battery and dual electric motors. Meanwhile, Deepal’s Australian distribution will remain under Inchcape.
