Kuwait City: Doctors at Jaber Al Ahmad Hospital have successfully completed a complex surgery to remove a cancerous tumor that had spread across the front of a young girl’s leg, while preserving as much of the limb’s function as possible. A multidisciplinary medical team involving specialists in plastic and reconstructive surgery, bone tumor surgery, orthopedics and anesthesiology performed the procedure.
Removing the tumor required the removal of important muscles and tissues involved in movement, which could have affected the girl’s ability to lift her foot and walk normally. Following tumor removal, doctors performed a frozen-section examination to quickly check the surgical margins and confirm that no cancerous cells remained before beginning the reconstruction.
To restore movement, surgeons transferred the peroneus longus muscle to the front of the leg and performed nerve reconstruction. The significant soft-tissue loss was also repaired using a specialized flap technique connected to blood vessels. The successful combination of cancer surgery and complex reconstruction helped remove the tumor while preserving the girl’s mobility and limb function as much as possible.
