Canada will impose tariffs on selected US imports in response to new 50% tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced. The move follows the collapse of trade negotiations between the two neighbouring countries.
The US tariffs affect a broad range of Canadian products, including furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing equipment and hockey gear, covering around US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States. Carney said Canada would respond on a dollar-for-dollar basis to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.
Canada will also introduce support measures for industries affected by the new US tariffs. The government said the measures are intended to help businesses and workers manage the impact of the escalating trade dispute while protecting the Canadian economy.
