The UAE is taking significant steps toward becoming one of the first countries to launch flying taxis, with several companies showing interest in the new transportation mode. Currently, two flying taxi companies, Archer and Joby, are in discussions with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to operate air taxi services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with a target launch in early 2026. As flying cars, also known as eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles), are a new technology, both manufacturers and regulators face challenges in approving and launching this mode of transport. The GCAA is working diligently to develop and update regulations that will support the introduction of flying taxis, ensuring safety and operational efficiency.
To prepare for these flying taxis, the UAE has already made significant strides in creating the necessary infrastructure. Dubai, for example, is planning to construct four vertiports across the city, with the first one set to be built at Dubai International Airport. These vertiports will serve as the take-off and landing hubs for air taxis, specifically designed for eVTOL operations. Additionally, the GCAA is considering a hybrid model in which existing helipads could be used as vertiports, further expanding the network of landing sites for these advanced air vehicles. This approach would streamline the process and ensure that there are enough landing sites in place to accommodate flying taxis.
The GCAA is also actively engaging with stakeholders to refine and implement regulations for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), which encompasses flying taxis and other next-generation air vehicles. In mid-2025, the GCAA plans to republish the current regulations under the updated AAM guidelines, reflecting the evolving needs of this emerging sector. These regulations will play a critical role in shaping the future of urban air mobility in the UAE, ensuring that flying taxis can operate safely and efficiently while meeting the country’s goals of providing eco-friendly, modern transportation solutions.
