Simple lifestyle changes can help reduce belly fat naturally, says nutritionist

A clinical nutritionist has shared simple yet effective lifestyle habits that may help reduce belly fat naturally without relying on crash diets or extreme workout routines.

According to nutritionist Shreya Shah, sustainable daily habits are the key to long term weight management and overall health improvement. In a recent social media post, she explained that belly fat reduction depends on consistent lifestyle changes rather than temporary weight loss methods.

She highlighted that the human body stores different types of fat, including essential fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, brown adipose tissue and intramuscular triglycerides. Among these, visceral fat around the abdominal area is considered one of the biggest health concerns.

The nutritionist explained that factors such as ageing, hormonal changes, stress, inactivity and poor diet can increase belly fat. Men are generally more likely to store fat around the abdomen, while women may experience increased belly fat after menopause due to hormonal shifts.

She advised avoiding refined carbohydrates, sugary snacks, processed foods and sweetened beverages, as they can increase blood sugar spikes and promote fat storage around the stomach area.

Instead, she recommended healthier alternatives such as water, coconut water, buttermilk and homemade lemon drinks. She also stressed the importance of increasing protein intake through foods like eggs, fish and dairy products to control cravings and support muscle growth.

Healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut, olives and fatty fish like salmon and mackerel were also suggested as better dietary options.

The nutritionist further emphasised the importance of regular physical activity, including walking frequently during the day, cardio workouts and strength training exercises to improve metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

Other important lifestyle habits included reducing alcohol consumption, managing stress levels and ensuring seven to eight hours of sleep every night. According to her, chronic stress and poor sleep can increase cravings, hormonal imbalance and fat accumulation around the abdomen.

She added that long term consistency and balanced lifestyle habits are more effective for maintaining healthy weight loss than quick fix diets or extreme exercise programmes.
