The humble jackfruit, long considered a staple in Kerala households, is gaining recognition as a nutritional powerhouse after a recent study highlighted its potential to improve heart health and blood sugar control.
Researchers from Alappuzha Medical College found that consuming powder made from mature, unripe jackfruit helped reduce cholesterol, triglyceride levels and high blood pressure while also supporting better blood sugar management in diabetic patients.
The study involved 100 individuals with diabetes over a three-month period. Half of the participants were given meals prepared using jackfruit powder, while the remaining participants continued with their regular breakfast routines.
According to the researchers, participants who consumed jackfruit-based dishes showed noticeable improvements in blood sugar levels when measured after three weeks and again after three months. The findings were published in the international journal Current Nutrition and Food Science.
Jackfruit powder is produced from mature unripe jackfruit bulbs that are dried and ground into flour. The gluten-free flour has a low glycaemic index and is rich in dietary fibre, making it particularly beneficial for people looking to manage diabetes and improve digestive health.
Nutrition experts note that jackfruit is packed with essential nutrients, including vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, calcium and antioxidants. Its fibre and potassium content may support heart health, while its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties may aid wound healing and overall wellness.
Researchers say the findings further strengthen jackfruit’s reputation as a healthy food option that goes beyond its growing popularity as a plant-based meat substitute.
