‘Vishwanath & Sons’ is a refreshing family drama that chooses emotion, humour and relationships over elaborate twists and larger-than-life conflicts. Directed by Venky Atluri, the film follows Sanjay Vishwanath, a former Olympic shooter whose disciplined life is challenged by family responsibilities, age and an unexpected relationship. Led by Suriya in a restrained performance, the film delivers a breezy and emotionally engaging experience.
Suriya is the film’s emotional centre, moving away from his usual action-heavy roles to portray a vulnerable and mature character. His understated expressions and controlled performance work particularly well in the emotional sequences. Mamitha Baiju brings youthful energy to the romance, while Radhika Sarathkumar adds warmth and humour to the family setting. The supporting cast, including Raveena Tandon, Nassar, Sudha, Raghu Babu and Viva Harsha, also contribute effectively to the film’s lived-in atmosphere.
Venky Atluri keeps the writing grounded, allowing humour and emotion to emerge naturally from the characters. While the first half is engaging, the 2-hour-41-minute film loses some momentum in the second half, with a few predictable developments and conventional subplots. However, several heartfelt sequences and a satisfying ending help it recover. GV Prakash Kumar’s background score and Nimish Ravi’s cinematography further complement the film’s emotional tone. Overall, Vishwanath & Sons may not reinvent the family-drama formula, but its warmth, humour and Suriya’s mature performance make it a pleasant choice for audiences seeking a clean, feel-good theatrical entertainer.
