WhatsApp has introduced a new storage management feature aimed at helping users better control shared media and documents while freeing up space occupied by channel content.
The Meta-owned messaging platform has made the feature available through the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.26.19.4. The update is designed to simplify storage management without affecting users’ existing conversations.
Easier Media and Storage Management
The new tool gives users greater control over media accumulated through WhatsApp channels. Users can manually or automatically remove channel media, making it easier to prevent photos, videos and other files from consuming excessive device storage.
The feature also provides options to filter content according to file type, allowing users to identify and remove unwanted files more efficiently.
At the same time, starred messages are protected, helping users retain important content while clearing unnecessary media.
By providing more detailed control over stored files, WhatsApp aims to make storage cleanup easier, particularly for users who follow several channels or frequently receive large amounts of media.
New Notification Alert for Channels
WhatsApp is also introducing a notification prompt for users who follow new channels.
After following a channel, users may receive an alert encouraging them to enable notifications so they do not miss important updates.
Previously, newly followed channels could be muted by default, potentially causing users to overlook new posts. The latest change is intended to make notification settings clearer and improve engagement with channel updates.
The new features are currently being tested through the Android beta version and could become more widely available following further testing.
