Dubai has begun a 10-day mourning period following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with flags to be flown at half-mast during the official mourning period.
The Dubai Media Office announced the mourning period on Monday, September 21, following the death of Sheikh Ahmed.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, paid tribute to his brother, writing on X that Sheikh Ahmed would remain in his prayers and heart.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also extended his condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed’s contributions to the development of the UAE since its formation.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, also mourned Sheikh Ahmed, describing him as a dear member of the family and saying he would remain in their hearts, memories and prayers.
Sheikh Ahmed held several prominent positions in Dubai’s public and sporting spheres. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and was Group Chairman of ARM Holding, a UAE-based private investment company.
He also served as President of Al Wasl Sports Club and was associated with the club’s development across several sporting disciplines, including football, basketball, volleyball and handball.
Al Wasl Football Club paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed following his death, recalling his role in the club’s sporting development. The football team has won eight UAE Pro League titles.
The mourning period follows the death of a member of Dubai’s ruling family and is intended as a mark of respect. During such periods, flags are typically flown at half-mast, while official events and entertainment activities may be affected depending on the directives issued for the mourning period.
The announcement comes as Dubai and the wider UAE pay tribute to Sheikh Ahmed and his contributions to the emirate and the country.
