UNVACCINATED AUSTRIANS HEADING TOWARDS LOCKDOWN

Sydney: Austrians are just days away from the country's first lockdown for anyone who hasn't been fully vaccinated, following record infections across the country.

Upper Austria province will impose restrictions on Monday if the federal government approves. In addition, new measures are being considered in Salzburg.

According to Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, a national lockdown for the unvaccinated is "probably unavoidable." He stated that two-thirds of the population should not suffer because others were hesitant.

Upper Austria, which borders Germany and the Czech Republic and has a population of 1.5 million people, has the highest infection rate and the lowest vaccination rate in the country.

Nationally, a total of 11,975 Covid-19 infections have been recorded in the last 24 hours, prompting Austria's coronavirus commission to issue a warning that the threat "must be taken seriously."
