Kuwait Raids Illegal Alcohol Factories After 13 Deaths from Methanol Poisoning

  • 14/08/2025

Kuwait’s Ministry of Health reported 63 cases of methanol poisoning over five days, linked to toxic homemade alcohol, resulting in 13 fatalities—all Asian expatriates. Thirty-one patients needed ventilators, 51 required kidney dialysis, and 21 suffered permanent vision loss. The ministry is coordinating round-the-clock care with hospitals and poison control centers while urging the public to report suspected cases.

A security task force traced the contaminated alcohol to Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, where raids uncovered clandestine distilleries in warehouses and homes. Ten distributors were arrested, with ongoing investigations to dismantle the network. Authorities confirmed the beverages contained lethal methanol levels, often added to bootleg liquor as a cheap intoxicant.

The crackdown highlights risks faced by migrant workers in Kuwait, where alcohol is banned but illicit production persists. The Interior Ministry warned of "zero tolerance" for distributors exploiting vulnerable communities, pledging stricter enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
