THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE PROTEST COVID CURBS IN EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in cities across Europe and Australia on Saturday, as outrage grew over new Covid restrictions imposed in response to a resurgent pandemic.

After the previous night's rioting in Rotterdam, Dutch police faced a second night of rioting — this time in The Hague.
Rioters threw stones and fireworks at police and set fire to bicycles after a day of mostly peaceful protests elsewhere in the Netherlands. Several people were detained.

Europe is dealing with a new wave of infections, and several countries have tightened restrictions, with Austria announcing a nationwide partial lockdown on Friday — the most dramatic restrictions in Western Europe in months.

The Netherlands went back into partial lockdown last Saturday, with at least three weeks of restrictions, and is now planning to prohibit unvaccinated people from entering certain venues, known as the 2G option.

Several thousand protesters gathered in Amsterdam, enraged by the latest measures. Another thousand marched through Breda, a southern city near the Belgian border, carrying banners with slogans like "No Lockdown."

Organizers said they were opposed to Prime Minister Mark Rutte's plans to bar unvaccinated people from bars and restaurants.
