KUWAIT: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Hamad Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah announced yesterday that Kuwaiti women will be able to join the army on December 19.

"We did not force women to join the army; we simply provided them with the same benefits as male officers in the army," he said at a press conference.
He explained that Kuwaiti women already work at the ministry, but as civilians, which means they do not receive the financial benefits that officers do.

Sheikh Hamad emphasized the accomplishments of the defense ministry, which was able to reduce its debts and expenses even before the fiscal year ended.
He also stated that the ministry will now publish its financial status on an annual basis, which it did not do previously.
Sheikh Hamad cautioned that cutting costs does not imply that Kuwait is not prepared to defend itself in the event of an emergency.
