Amid growing unrest in Los Angeles over aggressive immigration raids, a federal court has declined California Governor Gavin Newsom's request to limit the deployment of National Guard and Marines. The request will be formally heard on Thursday, but for now, federal authorities continue their operations unchecked.
As protests rage on, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has declared a local state of emergency. She stated that the unrest must end if ICE raids are to stop, emphasizing that the demonstrations have caused significant damage across the city. Mayor Bass also noted that further decisions will be made after consulting with community leaders and legal advisors.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stressed the importance of the emergency declaration to preserve public safety. He confirmed that anyone violating the emergency orders will face arrest. Since Saturday, arrests have sharply risen—from 27 over the weekend to nearly 200 by Tuesday.
The protests erupted in response to President Donald Trump's directive to intensify ICE operations, with reports suggesting a government target of 3,000 arrests daily. Last month, 239 undocumented individuals were detained in Los Angeles alone. The crackdown is seen as part of Trump’s broader immigration enforcement push, particularly targeting cities with high immigrant populations like L.A., where nearly one-third of residents are immigrants.
The protests, which began peacefully in the Paramount area, have turned increasingly violent following the deployment of National Guard troops. Trump has called the protests “an invasion of peace” and warned that more federal forces may be sent if the unrest continues.
