Driverless Robo-Taxis Launch Commercial Service in Abu Dhabi

  • 27/11/2025

Abu Dhabi has inaugurated commercial driverless robo-taxi services, marking a significant milestone as the first city in the Middle East and North Africa region to implement such technology. The service, operated through a partnership between WeRide and Uber, currently covers Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and routes to and from Zayed International Airport.

Passengers can book rides via Uber Comfort, UberX, or Autonomous apps, with the robo-taxis arriving at pickup locations without any human driver or vehicle expert. The system allows passengers to specify their destination and pay through debit or credit cards. Services operate from 10 AM to 4 PM daily.

The initiative began with trial operations in December 2024 and expanded to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands in July. Plans are underway to extend the service to main city areas by December. WeRide currently maintains over 100 autonomous vehicles in the Middle East, positioning Abu Dhabi at the forefront of smart mobility adoption in the region.
