PM Modi may travel to the UAE and Kuwait in January to strengthen ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to begin his foreign visit calendar in 2022 with trips to the UAE and Kuwait, both trusted allies, in early January.

While Modi will attend Expo 2020 in Dubai, HT has learned that the real reason for his visit is to thank both allies for their support during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to care for the large Indian diaspora in these two emirates.
The UAE has four million Indians, and Kuwait has nearly one million Indian diaspora, both of which contribute to the Indian economy through remittances and in times of need.
Despite the government's silence on the matter, PM Modi may visit these two countries in the first ten days of January 2022.
These two foreign trips are being given special attention because they are at the heart of India's West Asian foreign policy.

PM Modi has been focused on strengthening ties with Abu Dhabi since his first visit to the UAE in August 2015, at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with foreign minister S Jaishankar returning from the UAE last Sunday.

With trade volumes exceeding $60 billion, the UAE is India's third largest trading partner after the United States and China.
The trip in January 2022 will be Modi's fourth to the UAE; the previous PM to visit was Indira Gandhi, 32 years before his first visit.
