KUWAIT HAS 47.5 PERCENT OF ITS WORKFORCE ON DOMESTIC VISAS

Kuwait City: The Public Authority for Manpower's Occupational Safety Center launched surprise campaigns to arrest workers who work directly in the summer heat. Inspectors issued 40 penalties to construction workers on the first day of the campaign, which began on June 1, and said 47.5 percent of these workers were found to be having No 20 visas (domestic workers).

The prohibition is in place from noon to 4:00 p.m. during the summer and began on June 1, 2022. Several violations were issued to enterprises that are not committed to hiring workers during the afternoon during the campaign, which was led by Hamad Al-Makhial in the South Abdullah Al- Mubarak area, which is undergoing substantial construction and building activity.

According to Al-Makhial, the team was able to find 50 breaching sites, with 40 breaches against 13 workers (Article 18) and 19 for domestic workers operating in the construction and building industry.

On the sidelines of the tour, Al-Makhial emphasised the importance of maintaining worker safety without jeopardising project work or the interests of employers, pointing out that the decision's implementation is in accordance with international charters and agreements ratified by Kuwait to protect labour rights.

He went on to say that the authority will pursue violators via all legal channels, and that repeat offences will result in the owner's legal liability, as well as the closing of the company's file and the application of financial penalties. If the infringement is repeated, a new warning will be sent, which will trigger legal actions, beginning with a referral to the appropriate authority, closing the case, and fining the perpetrator roughly 100 dinars for each worker, with the fine being doubled if the violation is repeated. Al-Makhial stated that the inspection teams would continue to conduct surprise campaigns for the next three months, until the end of August, and that many businesses are cooperating and dedicated to carrying out the judgments of the commission.
