AFTER PELOSI'S VISIT, CHINA CLAIMS THE MILITARY DRILLS WITH TAIWAN ARE OVER

In the wake of US Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's visit to the autonomous island of Taiwan, China claims to have finished nearly a week of military exercises in the area.

The Chinese military reported that sea and air operations were effective and vowed to continue monitoring the Taiwan Strait.

Beijing was furious over Ms. Pelosi's quick trip because it sees Taiwan as a separatist province that should be brought back into the fold, if necessary by force.

China has been charged with using the exercises as a warm-up for an invasion by Taiwan.

The island's administration denies China's claims to the region and distinguishes itself from the mainland. Beijing wants to international isolate the island.
