The New York City metropolitan area experienced flash flooding on Friday, with the subway system suspended and vehicles stranded on roads. Numerous ground-level dwellings were flooded, and some streets were reduced to lakes. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York issued a warning of imminent and life-threatening flooding, and the state of emergency was declared for the city, Long Island and Hudson Valley.
