A new women-only dating platform, Tea Dating Advice, has quickly become the most downloaded free lifestyle app in the US, according to SensorTower. Designed to enhance online dating safety, Tea allows users to verify identities through AI tools like reverse image searches and phone number lookups. It also provides background checks and maps of registered sex offenders, aiming to empower women to avoid dangerous or deceptive individuals.
The app was launched in 2023 by Bay Area tech executive Sean Cook, inspired by his mother’s troubling experiences in the online dating world. Cook personally funded the app, which has now attracted over four million women. A key feature is a large anonymous group chat where users flag potential red or green flags about their dating encounters, helping others make informed choices.
Only women can register, and the verification process requires ID and photos, which are deleted after approval. Users can post anonymous reviews of men they’ve dated, and the app blocks screenshots to maintain privacy. While men cannot join, they can request to remove content about themselves by contacting the app’s support team.
Although hailed for promoting safer dating, the app has also sparked controversy regarding privacy, fairness, and the potential for misuse. Approval delays and the inability for men to defend themselves have fueled further debate online.
