Typhoon Kajiki Kills 3, Damages Thousands of Homes in Vietnam

Typhoon Kajiki struck Vietnam’s north central coast, resulting in at least 3 deaths and 10 injuries. The storm caused extensive damage, destroying nearly 7,000 houses, submerging 28,800 hectares of rice fields, and uprooting 18,000 trees. Additionally, 331 electricity poles were toppled, causing widespread power outages across provinces like Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh.

In the capital Hanoi, torrential rains triggered severe flooding, submerging vehicles and paralyzing traffic. Residential districts were inundated, and West Lake—the city’s largest—overflowed, exacerbating the crisis. The flooding occurred as Hanoi prepares to host its largest National Day parade in decades, commemorating the 80th anniversary of its founding.

After making landfall, Kajiki weakened into a tropical depression as it moved into Laos. However, Vietnamese officials warned of ongoing heavy rains, with some areas expected to receive up to 150 mm of rainfall in six hours, increasing risks of flash floods and landslides.

Before impacting Vietnam, the storm skirted China’s Hainan Island, forcing business closures and halting public transport in Sanya City. The widespread disruption highlights the typhoon’s destructive path and the urgent need for disaster response and recovery efforts in affected regions.
