Rare Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse to Grace UK Skies Sunday Evening

  • 07/09/2025

A rare total lunar eclipse, known as a "blood moon," will be visible across the United Kingdom on Sunday evening for the first time since 2022. The astronomical event will occur when Earth passes directly between the sun and moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface and creating a distinctive reddish appearance.

The Met Office has explained that the reddish hue results from sunlight being filtered through Earth's atmosphere, where blue light scatters and red wavelengths reach the moon. The eclipse will become visible around 7:30 PM, peaking at 7:33 PM, and will require clear views of the eastern horizon for optimal observation. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye.

Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer Dr. Ed Bloomer has advised observers to face east and find elevated positions with unobstructed horizons for best viewing. The Met Office has recommended checking local weather forecasts, noting that the clearest skies are expected across south-west and eastern England. The event will also be visible in Australia, Asia, and Africa, while most of the Americas will miss this celestial spectacle.
