Widespread Strikes and Protests Grip Italy to Demand Palestine Recognition

  • 23/09/2025

Italy witnessed its largest protests yet against the Gaza offensive, with tens of thousands demonstrating across dozens of cities. The widespread unrest, including a 24-hour general strike called by unions, led to school closures and significant disruptions to roads, trains, and port operations. Protesters demanded the Italian government change its stance and officially recognize the state of Palestine, aligning with other European nations.

The protests directly challenge the position of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, which has refrained from the recent international push for recognition, deeming it counterproductive before a state is formally established. In major cities like Rome and Milan, crowds waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans calling for a freeze on military and commercial ties with Israel. Dock workers in Genoa and Livorno blockaded ports, citing concerns over arms transfers.

This domestic pressure in Italy coincides with a significant diplomatic shift internationally. While Italian protesters expressed solidarity with Gaza and supported aid initiatives like the Sumud Flotilla, countries including France, the UK, Canada, and Australia have recently moved to recognize Palestine, highlighting a growing gap between the Italian government's position and both international trends and public sentiment at home.
