Afghans celebrate internet restoration after 48-hour Taliban blackout

Afghans have celebrated the restoration of internet and telecommunications services following a 48-hour nationwide blackout imposed by the Taliban government. Hundreds of residents gathered in Kabul streets to mark the connectivity return, with delivery driver Sohrab Ahmadi describing the atmosphere as resembling a religious holiday celebration. Global internet monitor NetBlocks confirmed partial service restoration after the complete shutdown had disrupted businesses, grounded flights, and limited emergency service access.

The Taliban government has not provided an official explanation for the telecommunications blackout, though a provincial spokesperson previously indicated internet restrictions aimed to "prevent vices." During the outage, Kabul's normally active city center fell silent as banks and shopping centers closed, international money transfers halted, and flights were canceled.

The United Nations had warned the blackout risked exacerbating Afghanistan's severe humanitarian crisis by inflicting significant harm on civilians. For many Afghans, particularly women and girls facing severe rights restrictions since 2021, internet access remains a crucial connection to the outside world and provided rare relief amid ongoing national uncertainty.
