UAE Schools Ban Sugary Snacks and Fizzy Drinks to Promote Healthy Eating

Government schools across the UAE have introduced stricter rules on the types of food students can bring to campus, banning sugary sweets, fizzy drinks, and other unhealthy snacks. The move aims to address concerns about the impact of excessive sugar and artificial additives on students’ behaviour, focus, and academic performance.

In notices sent to parents, schools said items such as artificially coloured sweets, flavoured crisps, and brightly coloured drinks are no longer permitted on school premises. School leaders highlighted concerns about products containing artificial colours and additives, some of which carry warnings about possible effects on children’s activity levels and attention spans.

Officials stressed that unhealthy eating habits can directly affect students’ emotional stability, concentration, and engagement in class. Parents have been urged to check school bags daily, provide balanced and nutritious meals, and remind children not to buy or share banned food items during the school day.
