Kerala to Receive Heavy Rain Until July 14; Yellow Alert in Five Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Kerala until July 14, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for five northern districts on Thursday.

The yellow alert is in effect for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, while the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has placed Ernakulam and Thrissur under an orange alert until Thursday morning due to the likelihood of heavy rain and wind speeds of up to 50 km/h at isolated locations.

In view of the adverse weather, district administrations in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Thursday. However, university and PSC examinations will be held as scheduled.

The IMD has also issued warnings for heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, as squally weather with winds of 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, is expected along the Kerala coast.

Additionally, high wave alerts have been issued for the Kannur and Mahe coasts, with waves forecast to reach 3.2 to 3.6 metres. Authorities have urged caution during marine activities and advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert for possible waterlogging, flooding, landslides, uprooted trees and power disruptions.

Although no district-level alerts have been announced for the remaining days of the week, the IMD has forecast rain or thundershowers across several parts of the state until July 14.
