KuwaitCity: Dr. Khaled Al-Obaid, The head of the fungi reference laboratory unitunder the Ministry of Health reported that there is no evidence to support anydirect relationship between COVID-19 and the black fungus disease.
Hefurther adds that black fungus disease is not contagious and does not createepidemics. He explained that the whole system regarding naming fungi accordingto their color is incorrect and the correct nomenclature should be used, thatis mucous fungus.
Hestated that it is a common fungus found in the environment and it plays animportant role in maintaining ecological balance. He mentioned that this typeof fungus may lead to the appearance of some serious diseases, such assinusitis that may sometimes extend to the eyes and brain, as well aspneumonia, patients who have critical immunity weakness, and patients withdiabetes are most prone to this.
Al-Obaidstated that the spread of this fungal disease in India has been observed inpatients with Covid-19 disease, causing serious infections that include thesinuses that may sometimes extend to the eyes and brain.
Headded that a recent study in 18 countries in Europe, America, and Asia pointedthat the cases of the mucous fungus connected with Covid-19 are sparse comparedto those in India.
Asa preventive measure, he recommended that patients with compromised immunityshould strictly adhere to health measures, and for diabetics, in addition tofollowing preventive measures as well as vaccination, they should maintain theblood sugar within permissible levels.
