Kuwait City: According to plastic surgery experts, the treatments provided by some dermatologists at their liposuction clinics may be considered illegal. They claim that insisting on executing these procedures puts patients' lives at jeopardy. They urged that the Medical Licensing Department enhance its oversight of such operations. "A dermatologist is not allowed to conduct liposuction like a cosmetic surgeon," said Dr. Emad Al-Najada, a consultant plastic surgeon and head of maxillofacial surgery at the Ministry of Health. The former Minister of Health, Dr. Jamal Al-Harbi, issued Ministerial Law No. 245/2017, which highlights the specialisations that are authorised to perform liposuction and similar operations, the locations where they can be performed, and the volumes that can be suctioned."

He emphasised that what is now being done in some clinics in terms of liposuction is against the law, and that neither general nor local anaesthetic is allowed. Total anaesthesia operations must be performed only in approved facilities and hospitals. As a result, the current methods in several Kuwaiti clinics are incorrect. The Medical Licensing Department needs to be more involved in this.

Furthermore, some dermatology clinics have been observed extracting or injecting huge amounts of fats during liposuction procedures. This puts the patients' lives at jeopardy. "The law has permitted specific specialisations to undertake some cosmetic surgeries," Dr. Hisham Borzek, a consultant in burn surgery at the Ministry of Health and the head of the Kuwait Cosmetic Association, stated. The Medical Licensing Department is the regulatory agency with the authority to inspect and, if required, penalise. It must ensure that doctors adhere to these guidelines." He emphasised the importance of patient education and urged the administration to prioritise patient education.
