Hundreds of people were killed or injured in four blasts across Afghanistan on Thursday, according to local officials and journalists.

The first explosion ripped through a Shia mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif.

At least 31 individuals were murdered, while another 87 were injured.

The Islamic State group (IS) admitted responsibility for the incident, claiming that a booby-trapped suitcase was remotely detonated when the building was full with worshippers.

The incident was described by the group as part of a global campaign to "avenge" the murders of its previous commander and spokesman.
